Chhatar Manzil (Umbrella Palace)
Named for the gilded, umbrella-shaped domes (chhatris) that crown the structure, this palace was once a lavish royal residence for the Nawabs of Awadh. Commissioned by Nawab Saadat Ali Khan and completed by his successors, its architecture is a unique fusion of Indo-Italian and European styles, featuring large symmetrical windows and ornate railings. The palace is located along the Gomti River and was historically known for its underground rooms used to escape the summer heat. It played a critical role during the 1857 Uprising as a rebel headquarters before later being used by the Central Drug Research Institute.
