Butler Palace

Butler Palace

Built in 1915 by Raja Mehmoodabad, this palace is a rare example of Rajasthani-style architecture in Lucknow. It was named after Sir Harcourt Butler, the then-Governor of the United Provinces, and features four-sided domes and intricate stone carvings. The palace is uniquely situated near a large lake (Butler Palace Jheel), which is currently undergoing ecological restoration. For many years, it served as an “enemy property” and was used for various administrative purposes, but the Lucknow Development Authority has recently taken steps to conserve and promote its adaptive reuse. Its distinct architectural silhouette makes it a notable heritage landmark in the city’s modern central district.
